Recently, Sawyer has been getting really excited about playing with play dough. We only had a 4-pack of colors that were given to us as a gift, so when a friend told me that she came across a great homemade play dough recipe I just had to give it a try. I’m so glad I did! This is the easiest recipe and I love the results! The dough has a great texture, not too sticky. And I love that I was able to customize all of the colors with food coloring.
Homemade Play Dough
Below is the recipe and my step-by-step photos.
First, combine the wet and dry ingredients in a medium pan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.
The dough will begin to congeal and pull away from the sides of the pan.
Next, remove the dough from the pan and kneed on a floured dusted counter.
Then, I divided seven equal amounts of dough. Of course, you can divide as many or few as you would like. I wanted to create a lot of different colors. Next, I started adding food coloring to the dough, kneeding it to spread the color throughout. I kept adding food coloring until the dough got to a vibrant color that I was liking. The dough requires a lot of food coloring.
After I created red, yellow, green and blue dough then I mixed red with yellow to make orange and red and blue to make purple. To make brown, I mixed red, blue and yellow.
To keep the dough nice and soft, store in an airtight container with a damp paper towel.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that we are going to be having a lot of fun with this play-doh!
