A very sweet friend once told me that when she is stressed and in need of perspective she changes her “have to’s” to “get to’s.”
For example: “I can’t believe I have to get up for the fourth time tonight with my teething baby.” or “I can’t believe I have to go to work today.” Becomes: “I can’t believe I get to get up for the fourth time tonight with my teething baby.” or “I can’t believe I get to go to work today.”
I love this idea. It really does change your outlook, and somehow you instantly become more grateful and more aware of all of your blessings. It’s empowering. You realize that you are a mother to a beautiful child that is healthy and developing well and getting teeth for the first time. Or you become more thankful for your job and the way in which you are able to provide for your family.
Don’t get me wrong, some days are definitely harder than others. We are all human. It’s only natural to feel frustrated sometimes. But I have found that changing my have to’s to get to’s helps me see that silver lining a lot more quickly. I hope it helps you too.
