Hi Friends! I’m excited to share Sawyer’s 8th birthday celebration with all of you today! Sawyer absolutely loves Pokemon so this year he wanted a Pokemon Birthday Party theme! Of course, 2020 is a year like no other so due to the pandemic and social distancing we felt it wasn’t a good idea to have a big party with all of our friends and extended family. Instead, we just had a small little celebration with family and tried to make it as special as we could. Although different, it was such a great day! Sawyer had a blast and I’m sure it will be a birthday he won’t forget for a long time!
In an effort to try to make Sawyer’s birthday a really special and memorable day, I created a bunch of fun Pokemon themed party foods and DIYs. This post was getting a little lengthy as I was describing everything so I decided to separate it out into individual step-by-step tutorial posts. Below are direct links to these posts if you want to skip right to the DIY tutorials.
DIY Pikachu Birthday Cake
“Poke-a-Ball” Pokemon Punch Boxes
Pokemon Oreo Pops
Pikachu Ice Cream
I decided to set up Sawyer’s Pokemon Birthday Party outside in our backyard. I first started by setting up my photography backdrop frame. This worked really well as a framework for the balloon garland. Then, I just tied all of the other Pikachu and friends character balloons to the frame as well. I’ve linked the frame and all of the balloons that I used at the bottom of this post.
Of course, the birthday boy needed to dress the part of Ash Ketchum! When Sawyer first came outside, he found his outfit and quickly suited up to get ready to “catch ’em all!”
DIY Pikachu Birthday Cake
Earlier this month while I was talking with Sawyer about his birthday celebration he only had two requests—that the day be filled with all things Pokemon and that I make him a Pikachu birthday cake. Full disclosure, I don’t really bake a lot of cakes—I’ve never been very good at it and I had never made a 3D sculpted cake. But since this was one of only two requests, I was bound and determined to give it my best shot! Here is a full detailed tutorial of how I made the cake>>
“Poke-a-Ball” Pokemon Punch Boxes
These “Poke-a-Ball” Pokemon punch boxes are so much fun! I surprised Sawyer by putting his gifts in them for his birthday. He totally loved them! They are very easy to make and really inexpensive too. Also, you can arrange them around the party and they double as fun party decorations! Here is a full detailed tutorial of how these punch boxes>> (Also, be sure to check out the video to see him in action!)
I made two other fun Pokemon themed foods for Sawyer’s birthday celebration too — Pokemon Oreo Pops and Pikachu Ice Cream cones! You can check out these individual posts for the step-by-step tutorials of how to make these simple treats. Full disclosure…here’s the scoop (see what I did there)…Pikachu Ice Cream is now ALL the rage in our house these days!
Happy Birthday to my crazy imaginative, Pokémon-loving, incredibly caring and creative boy! Sawyer, I love you more than any words could ever express. It is such a true honor to be your mom and watch you grow into such an independent, compassionate boy and big brother. May you forever go all-in for a good themed celebration and never lose your love of dressing the part, living life to the fullest and embracing all the fun. This is 8. Let’s celebr-eight!
I hope you enjoyed Sawyer’s Pokemon Birthday Party! If you use any of these ideas, I’d love to see them! Please tag me on Instagram. I love connecting with all of you and seeing your awesome celebrations!

So cute! How did you make the large Pokemon card/photo frame?
Alison says
Hi Rebecca
Thanks so much for your message! I appreciate it! I made the large Pokemon card in Adobe Illustrator. It was something that my son asked me to make. He decided on all the wording, etc. It was just a fun little treat for him for his birthday. Unfortunately, Pokemon is a licensed brand so I can’t put the template in the printable library. I’m sorry!
Thanks again for reaching out!

I LOVE your designs! Where in the world did you find the Pokemon card selfie frame!?!
Alison says
Hi Toni,
Thanks so much! You’re so sweet! I made the Pokemon card photo frame myself (using Adobe Illustrator). My son asked me to make it. He decided on all the wording. It was just a fun little birthday treat for him. Unfortunately, Pokemon is a licensed brand so I can’t put the template in the printable library.
Thanks again so much!

So fun! Do you have printable for the ‘Poke a ball’ sign?! So cute!
Alison says
Hi Bailey,
Thank you so much for your message! I’m sorry but I don’t have the “poke-a-ball” sign as a printable. I hope you can use the idea and inspiration though! Sorry again!
Thanks so much!
Take care,
Alison
