Hi Friends! Easter is only a few days away and I have a fun (and yummy) activity to share with you today—homemade Ice Cream in a Bag Easter Bunny Treat! As parents, we are wearing lots of hats these days and this activity checks a lot of boxes! It’s a fun activity to do as a family AND it’s a science lesson (for all of us homeschooling young kids) AND it’s a delicious treat! A win-win-win! You can easily put an Easter spin on this ice cream treat as well as we all celebrate Easter at home this year. It’s no secret that we love to celebrate with ice cream around here! Did someone say, ice cream sundaes on Easter Sunday?! Yes, please!
This ice cream in a bag Easter bunny treat could not be easier! I love that it’s simple enough for my kids (ages 4 and 7) to be really be able to actively do it with very little help. The ice cream ingredients—half and half, vanilla extract and sugar—all get mixed together in a sandwich sized Ziploc baggie. Then you will need ice and rock salt for the gallon sized baggie. Below are the step-by-step instructions.
Step 1: To begin, combine 1 cup Half & Half, 2 tbsp. Sugar and 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract in a sandwich sized baggie. Try to push all excess air out of the baggie before sealing it tightly at the top. I also found that double bagging the mixture was helpful to make sure there were no tiny leaks.
Step 2: Next, in a gallon sized baggie combine 3 cups of Ice and 1/3 cup Rock Salt.
Step 3: Place the sandwich baggie inside the gallon bag and seal the top of the larger baggie closed. Shake the bag vigorously for about 5-10 minutes or until the ice cream begins to solidify in the sandwich baggie. During this time you can explain to your kids the science behind this activity and the change of matter that is occurring. The change of temperature is turning the liquid into a solid. Also, adding salt to the ice is causing the temperature to drop much more dramatically.
Step 4: While my boys were shaking their ice cream bags, I cut some marshmallows into bunny ears. Cut each marshmallow at a diagonal and then dip the cut-side-down into a small dish of pink sugar. The sticky portion will stick to the sugar, creating instant bunny ears!
Step 5: After your ice cream has solidified, scoop it into a cup and decorate it like a bunny or with any sundae toppings you’d like! Enjoy!
